Abuse Child Abuse happens in
America
more frequently than most people know. Children can be abused by
parents,
teachers, caregivers, relatives or strangers. Abuse often happens
when people lose control of their anger. Abuse can come in the form of
persistent verbal aggression, physical aggression that injures, the
omission
of necessary care, and inappropriate sexual behavior.
Statistics: In 2003, an estimated 906,000 children
were victims of abuse and neglect. The rate of
victimization per 1,000 children in the national population has dropped
from 13.4 children in 1990 to 12.4 children in 2003. Yet experts
believe
that instances of child abuse and neglect occur three times more often
than reported.
For 2003, an estimated 1,500 children died due to child abuse or neglect. Of these fatalities attributed to child abuse and neglect, 75% were under the age of four. More children (age four and younger) die from child abuse and neglect than any other single, leading cause of death for infants and young children, including: falls, choking on food, suffocation, drowning, fires, and automobile accidents.
9 in 10 Americans polled regard child abuse as a serious problem, yet when confronted with an actual situation, only 1 in 3 reported abuse. |
